Seasonal Moth Surveys at Drummin Bog
We are delighted that a new volunteer for the Drummin Bog Project, Robbie Donnelly, has offered to undertake seasonal moth surveys.
Moths thrive in undisturbed habitats where there is a diversity of plants for food and shelter. And when there is diversity with flora and fauna, beauty is also there, as you will see in the many strikingly beautiful moths living well on Drummin Bog.
Robbie initially offered two mornings for Drummin Bog committee members to learn how he sets up moth traps, the equipment he uses, and an introduction to moth guidebooks. The variety of moths is astonishing, and their different beautiful wing patterns and textures are captivating.
On the evening of 29 May 2026, Robbie set the first trap up close to the small Drummin Bog pond, and the 2nd trap in from the viewing platform, close to the trees that encircle Drummin Bog.
Members of the Drummin Bog Committee arrived at 8 am the next day to check what moths had been attracted to the UV light and the difference in moths living on the bog and those living near woodland habitats.
The traps contain egg cartons that provide a safe place for the moths to land in the ‘trap’. All these beautiful moths were carefully released back to enjoy their peatland and woodland habitats.

Our 2nd Moth Survey: Robbie set up his moth collection equipment on 18 July, 2026.
