Please join us for a walk and talks on Drummin Bog to celebrate Moths and Water

Drummin Bog is celebrating Water Heritage Day 2026 with two entrancing events.

The Beauty of Moths – 8 am

Come along to Drummin Bog, St, Mullins, Co. Carlow to celebrate Water Heritage Day, Sunday 23rd August.

We will be releasing moths from two overnight moth traps at 8am, with the guidance of Robbie Donnelly.

We will be using citizen science to identify what we find, while seeing what moths Drummin Bog may support.

Break – 10:30 am

We will be having a tea break at 10.30 am. Refreshments and food provided. Please bring your keep cups.

This will give the opportunity for folk to arrive for the water talk who may not be able to make the moth releases.

Understanding the Water that Supports Drummin Bog – 11:30 am

At 11.30 am, James Lalor, the hydrogeologist who has been monitoring water levels on Drummin Bog for the past 5 years, will give a talk on the importance of water to Drummin Bog, including what groundwater is, how water data is collected, and how water works in the landscape.

James has been monitoring water levels on Drummin Bog since 2021.

He has built up a body of knowledge and data about water on Drummin Bog and how it affects this special site.

PLEASE NOTE: Access to Drummin Bog is limited due to the sensitive nature of the habitat and its status as a wildlife reserve. Great precaution must be taken in visiting the bog due to its unmarked deep drains, and other hazards. It is therefore recommended people do not walk on the bog alone. Children must always be supervised and no dogs please as efforts are in place to encourage birds to return. Thank you for understanding. In time, a woodland walkway is envisaged. The Drummin Bog Project is in its very early stages.
